my name is
Dr. Kamilah Hampton
As a proud mother of a future MLB-prospect, she knows firsthand the time, dedication, and resources it takes to nurture a well-rounded athlete.
And, as the Principal of Richard J Daley Academy, she’s witnessed the continual struggle that many minority and low-income families go through to provide athletic and academic opportunities for their deserving children.
It is through observing this growing disparity in access that inspired Dr. Hampton to start her nonprofit, Community Excel as well as launch KDT Sports, the first-of-its-kind athletic training facility in the Chicagoland area.
Known for her exceptional leadership skills, academic prowess, and natural ability to connect and inspire educators and parents, Dr. Hampton has quickly risen through the ranks within the Chicago Public School System to be on pace to become the youngest Superintendent in the school district’s history.
With a Bachelors in Speech Pathology and Audiology, Master’s degrees in Education, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership – she proves that true educators never stop learning.
The 2018 release of her uplifting book, It’s Worth The Wait Dr. Hampton has touched the lives of so many women, inspiring them to stand patient and committed to walking in their God-given assignments.
Dr. Hampton’s unwavering dedication to children of all ages, races, and demographic backgrounds is single handedly redefining what opportunities are possible for hundreds of students every year.
Showing the world what’s truly possible for student athletes when they’re given the right combination of empowerment, enrichment, and education.

Dr. Hampton is a true mentor and innovator that pushes past all obstacles to reach her goals. She has pushed me in my professional career to think outside of the box and to strive for greater. She has a heart and a passion to see others operate in their purpose and gifts. Dr. Hampton is also a fearless leader that wants all students and staff at her school to have an enjoyable experience in learning and working together in a community of growth. Her relationship with students and families is so genuine and compassionate that we have witnessed her work with community resources to support families with various needs. She has encouraged parents to return to school and enhance their education as well as encouraged parents to understand the importance of self-care and its impact on their relationship with their children. My own personal children have benefited from her mentorship as she has helped develop them into proud black girls that embrace their hair, bodies, and culture. Dr. Hampton is truly an innovator, game changer, advocate, philanthropist, compassionate educator, and authentic woman of grace and dignity.

Assistant Principal
I am Brandi Whitfield-Lewis, a proud Chicago Public School alumni, parent, and award-winning educator. Presently, I am the Assistant Principal of Calmeca Academy of Dual Language and Fine Arts. Transitioning from a CPS Lead Teacher into a leadership role was an exhilarating and daunting task for me. I did not know how to make the “proverbial mind shift” from working day to day with the students I had phenomenal academic success with to training teachers to build their own capacity to drive rigorous instruction. To pursue my dream as an academic leader, I attended graduate school, and professional development and earned a fellowship to build my leadership. I quickly realized even after all of my advanced training, I lacked the confidence and emotional - intelligence required to manage a school in such a diverse district. I decided to move into a coaching role as an Instructional Support Leader (ISL) in 2020 so I could have an opportunity to improve my leadership deficiencies.
Once I presented at a Network workshop Dr. Hampton recognized my drive and determination and requested me to support her school as her Network ISL. She eventually became my mentor and worked with me to refine my resume, and leadership artifacts for job interviews conducted mock interviews with me and coached me through the rigorous process to become ready for the Chicago Public School Principal Eligibility Exam. I even applied and was accepted at National Louis University for their prestigious doctoral program in Educational Leadership after her encouragement.
Dr. Hampton’s mentoring was the preparation I needed to develop the confidence and competency to be a strong and focused leader. She never allowed me to settle. Her focused feedback caused me to shift my mindset to how I can develop relational trust and objectively look at situations to make the best decisions for our students. I am excited about the leadership opportunities I have been afforded as a result of the powerful mentorship and preparation Dr. Hampton provided me. I highly recommend her as a coach, mentor, and academic leader!

Assistant Principal
Driven. Respected. Dedicated. Resilient. These are terms that embody the character of Dr. Kamilah Hampton. I have known Dr. Hampton for almost 15 years. I have been a first hand witness to her love for Christ, her family, her son, educating children, leadership and more specifically her calling to improve the lives and opportunities provided to African American boys.
Dr. Hampton’s passion and capacity to cultivate leadership in other leaders propels her as a savant in the educational arena. Not only does she have a thorough understanding of the overarching ideas in public education, but she also possesses the granular knowledge to execute the day to day competencies that will achieve results for those overarching ideas.
I worked under Dr. Hampton as an instructional coach during the 2020-2021 school year. She led and continues to lead Daley Academy with a heavy focus on equity for her students. Being a part of her instructional leadership team, Dr. Hampton allowed us to facilitate grade level, content level, and school-wide meetings. She modeled her expectations for meeting facilitation with us, then allowed us to execute those expectations with the teachers and departments in which we led. Not only did Dr. Hampton model how to facilitate meetings, she then calibrated with us individually and collectively on the technical aspects of being an administrator. These collaborative sessions were extremely helpful to our development as future building leaders.
The most beneficial mentoring tools Dr. Hampton provided were her prowess at securing grant funding and developing Daley’s brand. Dr. Hampton tasked us with grant writing for the benefit of the Daley students. Public schools are woefully underfunded and grants help fill those gaps. Leading a minority school sometimes presents further challenges and greater needs. The funds that we applied for and received, helped to provide the teachers and students with the necessary tools to be successful.
During the school week, you will often see Dr. Hampton wearing Daley Academy paraphernalia. She ensures that the community sees the pride she takes in leading Daley and her efforts to re-brand the school's image. Not only does she wear the paraphernalia, but she makes sure her staff is armed with tons of Daley gear as well. I have taken her examples of rebranding and employed those same principles as an administrator in my current school as we seek to reimagine who we are within our community. None of this would be possible without with guidance and mentorship I received from Dr. Kamilah Hampton.
